Presidential Overburden – November 2023

Guest Contributor | 11/10/23

Hello, IMAA Members:

They say if you don’t like the weather in Indiana, stay – it will change! The arrival of beautiful fall colors and cool weather brings a certain amount of anxiety, knowing cold weather and snow is behind it, and there is still a LOT of work to be done. What doesn’t change with the Indiana seasons is the work our staff and committees at the IMAA do to provide programming, educate, and advocate for our members.

For example, the IMAA/IRMCA joint summer meeting in Louisville was a huge success. The opportunity to visit Churchill Downs and network with industry friends and their families was a hit! Our recent IMAA Golf Outing, hosted by the PIE Committee, featured the largest field we have had in recent memory! It may have been the best weather we’ve ever had, as well. And the ELP (Excellence in Leadership Program) will graduate our third class in February at the Winter Workshops. It has proven to be a highly effective training and professional development experience. ELP provides an opportunity to collaborate on a project with industry peers and present their project to the IMAA Board. If you can speak with former participants regarding their experience, I encourage it.

Speaking of the Winter Workshops, you might or might not be aware that the annual Indiana “ROADCON” conference has been scheduled for the same week as IMAA Winter Workshops. This may create scheduling conflicts, as the quantity of participants from IMAA membership at ROADCON is traditionally heavy. The Winter Workshop is our largest event of the year. We hope to see record numbers at the JW Marriott again this year, despite this challenge!

In other committee news, the Legislative Committee has been actively involved in the FIRSST (Funding Indiana’s Roads for a Stronger Safer Tomorrow) Task Force with BIC to create infrastructure funding for the immediate future and will continue that work at the annual DC Fly-in next spring.

Another constant for us is the financial health of the IMAA. We are blessed BECAUSE our staff and committees create valuable opportunities for us to participate. The dedication to high quality events and educational programming makes investing resources in the IMAA easy to justify!

I want to close with special thanks to Calvin, Katie and staff, the committee chairs, and board members for their efforts to ensure the success of our IMAA.

Sincerely,
Spencer DePoy, IMAA 2023 Board President
