Introducing the WLMA Book Club

Katie Allison | 03/06/23

Join the IMAA WLMA Book Club for guided discussions and deep dives on individual development.

Starting April 14th, join the IMAA Women Leaders in Mining & Aggregates group for a 4 session breakdown of Dare to Lead by Brené Brown.

The WLMA Book Club features 3 online sessions of guided discussions and small group exercises with the 4th and final session being in-person for face-to-face networking, a final discussion and celebration for taking another step in your personal and professional development.

Book: Dare to Lead by Brené Brown

Brave Work. Tough Conversations. Whole Hearts.

When we dare to lead, we don’t pretend to have the right answers; we stay curious and ask the right questions. We don’t see power as finite and hoard it; we know that power becomes infinite when we share it with others. We don’t avoid difficult conversations and situations; we lean into vulnerability when it’s necessary to do good work. But daring leadership in a culture defined by scarcity, fear, and uncertainty requires skill-building around traits that are deeply and uniquely human. The irony is that we’re choosing not to invest in developing the hearts and minds of leaders at the exact same time as we’re scrambling to figure out what we have to offer that machines and AI can’t do better and faster. What can we do better? Empathy, connection, and courage, to start.

Cost: $25

Your contribution to the WLMA Book Club includes a hardcover copy of the book so that you can follow along with the page numbers for the guided reading, the discussion guide and exercise workbook, and the 4 discussion sessions.

Expectations

♦ We are shipping you a printed copy of Dare to Lead. We love audiobooks and reading on our e-readers, but these formats are much more complicated to use with a companion workbook. We’ll be referencing page numbers when asking you to find and re-read pieces. Please feel free to utilize the other formats to complete your reading, but be prepared with your printed copy during the sessions.

♦ There’s not a right way to start. You can read the entire book and then work through the exercises, referring back to sections you’ve already read. Or you can read one section at a time and complete the workbook as you go. We simply ask that you come to each session having at least read the section that we will be discussing.

♦ Your time and development are important. We will be starting each Zoom session on time and we ask that you commit to setting aside the hour and a half to be fully present for yourself and those joining us.

The WLMA Book Club is a program to continue to fulfill our goal of providing individual development, industry knowledge and peer networking through WLMA. We hope that you will be joining us for our pilot Book Club!
